Rob McElhenney has shared a tweet celebrating the Super Bowl win of the Philadelphia Eagles by referencing his television series It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia native – who stars in the series as Mac – has long been vocal about his support for the team, which won the annual Super Bowl yesterday (February 10).

The show has previously made the sports team a recurring presence. In the season three episode ‘The Gang Gets Invincible’ from 2007, Mac, Dennis (Glenn Howerton) and Dee (Kaitlin Olson) try out for the team.

A more recent episode from 2018 titled ‘The Gang Wins The Big Game’ followed its main characters in their quest to attend the Super Bowl. The end credits of the episode featured real-life footage of McElhenney reacting to the Eagles’ win that year.

“Not so dangerous anymore. Top 5 best nights of my life,” McElhenney tweeted yesterday upon the Eagles’ win.

McElhenney also retweeted a tweet that used footage from ‘The Gang Wins The Big Game’ – where Mac and Charlie (Charlie Day) are seen beating up children – in reference to the match’s events that led to the team’s win.

A fan also pointed out in a tweet that the win took place on Day’s birthday, with others sharing their hopes for another Super Bowl-themed episode.

McElhenney and crew recently starred in an episode of Abbott Elementary that saw the It’s Always Sunny cast – which also includes Danny DeVito – crossover into the sitcom, which also takes place in Philadelphia.

At the Super Bowl yesterday, the actor shared a picture of himself with Olson, his real-life wife, and Abbott Elementary‘s Quinta Brunson and Tyler James Williams.

McElhenney was recently interviewed by NME for the latest entry of Soundtrack Of My Life, in which he shared the songs that mean the most to him.

When asked about “the song I can’t get out of my head”, he responded with the Eagles’ anthem ‘Fly, Eagles, Fly’, a song that had been on loop for him in the lead-up to the Super Bowl.

“Probably no one outside of the city of Philadelphia is aware of it, but I’ve been listening to it on loop for the last 16 weeks,” he told NME. “The Philadelphia Eagles just won the NFC Championship and are on their way to the Super Bowl.”

“In the US, sports anthems aren’t as popular as they are in the UK – in Wrexham [the club he co-owns with Ryan Reynolds], there’s so many football chants and songs which are a fun way for the crowd to interact – but the Eagles’ fight song is Number One for me right now!”
